What Can I Expect With a Mental Health Evaluation?

- User Submitted

A parent is needing to get a mental health evaluation done on their child by suggestion of the teacher. And this parent's asking, what can I expect and how do we even go about that? So probably you would wanna see a clinical psychologist, uh, because it's typically they can do an assessment, but if you have insurance, you'd probably wanna contact your insurance company and, and ask them the question and say, I've, my school counselor has made this request to what are my best resources? Or contact the, the school counselor and ask for resources where that can be done. So I would get that kind of information, the school counselor, or I would contact a counseling psych or clinical psychologist who can do assessment. And I would, I would start there now in your insurance company, if you've got insurance, we can help guide you in that direction. Generally speaking, uh, you might wanna get information from the school counselor of what their concern is so you know specifically what to ask for in the assessment. So that would be something that you would want more clarity on rather than it just being a broad mental health assessment. I don't, I don't necessarily know specifically what they're referring to there. Are we looking at a DHD? Are we looking at something else? Uh, anxiety, depression. I mean, what, what is the mental health concern that the school administrator has, has found or identified? So I would probably wanna approach it that way with getting more information. They don't have to be intimidated by this. It's just a, hey, let, let's find out and, um, get the information. I often say data is very important and very helpful for us, so I would go get more information.
