This session was made possible by a grant from the US Department of Education called Helping Helpers Help.
My name is Lori Padilla. I’m a licensed professional clinical counselor practicing in New Mexico, and I’m also a grandparent raising a grandchild.
This course is all about grandparents and kin raising children, so you don’t necessarily have to be a grandparent raising children. You could also be a relative, like an aunt and uncle, even a friend or a neighbor. To capture everybody, we say “and kin.”
In this course we’re going to cover:
What happens when you receive the child or the child comes into your home.
How do you keep that child safe?
How do you interact with the community around you?
How do you ask for resources? Can you ask for resources?
What resources are there? Where can you get support?
Are there other people like you?
And then, how you can also be an advocate for yourself and your child.
