This session was made possible by a grant from the US Department of Education called Helping Helpers Help.

My name is Lori Padilla. I’m a licensed professional clinical counselor practicing in New Mexico, and I’m also a grandparent raising a grandchild.

This course is all about grandparents and kin raising children, so you don’t necessarily have to be a grandparent raising children. You could also be a relative, like an aunt and uncle, even a friend or a neighbor. To capture everybody, we say “and kin.”

In this course we’re going to cover:

  • What happens when you receive the child or the child comes into your home.

  • How do you keep that child safe?

  • How do you interact with the community around you?

  • How do you ask for resources? Can you ask for resources?

  • What resources are there? Where can you get support?

  • Are there other people like you?

  • And then, how you can also be an advocate for yourself and your child.
